Restored Unity - October 28, 2009

LIFE Group/Family Discussion Guide Restored Unity From the lesson of 10.11.2009

Breaking the Ice: Come up with a group definition of the word “unity” and provide examples of people practicing unity in real life.

Please Read: John 17:20-23

1. Why did Jesus pray for his followers to be united? 2. Compile a list of barriers which stand in the way of Christians being united. 3. Suggest ways to overcome the barriers listed above. Review Dr. Douglas Foster’s paraphrase of the 13 points for Christian unity contained in Alexander Campbell’s 1809 Declaration and Address. (attached) 4. Which of these has proven hardest to attain and why? 5. Which of these have we been most successful at? 6. What does the term “restoration” mean as it relates to the “Restoration Movement?” 7. How can restoration contribute to unity? 8. What’s the difference between restoration for the purpose of personal salvation and restoration for the purpose of unity among believers? 9. Which groups of believers do you believe churches of Christ have the most in common with and how can we build on that? 10. How should we interact with believers who disagree with us over biblical issues of salvation? From "One Church: A Bicentennial Celebration of Thomas Campbell's Declaration & Address.” 2008 By Douglas A. Foster The following propositions are by no means intended to be a creed or something to be imposed on believers—nothing could be farther from the truth. They are designed, rather, to focus our hearts and minds on the great question of what it means to be followers of Christ. Too often we seem to have forgotten what is central to our identity as Christians and as Christ’s church. It is our hope that these ideas will stimulate serious consideration of who we are and who we ought to be. 1. Christ established one church—just one. This church is made up of everyone who has faith in Christ and is trying to follow him in the ways God’s Spirit in scripture has told us, and who others can see are being transformed into his likeness by the way they act. No one else has a right to be called a Christian. 2. It is physically impossible for all Christians to be together in one place to worship and work, so there have to be local groups of Christians that reflect the culture, language, and context of each place. These groups will not all look, think or act alike, yet they are all part of Christ’s church and ought to recognize it. They must accept and embrace each other just as Christ has accepted each of us. This will happen when Christians have the mind of Christ—that is, when they are willing to give themselves for those Christ died to redeem. This is the rule of Christ. This and this alone will join them perfectly. 3. Therefore, nothing should be required to recognize, fellowship, embrace, work, worship and be in full visible unity with all Christians that is not specifically made a requirement by God through his word. Nothing should be required in the way local bodies of Christians operate that is not specifically required by Christ and his Apostles for the church. Furthermore, the chief requirements for full fellowship that God has decreed are our love for God and for people. This love is formed by our understanding of God’s love for us shown through Christ. 4. Both the Old and New Testaments are essential parts of the revelation of God’s nature and work. They cannot be separated. While it is true that the practices required in the Old Testament (sacrifices, temple worship, priesthood, etc.) are not in force for Christians and that the good news of God’s saving work is found fully in the New Testament, both testaments teach us about God’s nature and work. The Bible is not primarily a constitution that functions as a legal document to consult in legal disputes. It is, instead, the sword of the Spirit; it is a place where we encounter God’s Spirit and are transformed increasingly into the likeness of Christ. Being in scripture is essential to the visible unity of Christ’s church. 5. The Bible does not spell out in detail everything Christians are supposed to think, do or be—that is just not the nature of scripture. When there are specific actions Christians are told to take, there is almost never a set of detailed requirements for how to do it. Humans often want more detail and try to expand on the specifics, often making them requirements for accepting other Christians or groups of Christians. That is wrong. Again, Christians are those who say they are Christians and who show that they are by the way they live. No one should be allowed to require anything for recognition and fellowship that is outside of scripture and its work of transformation. 6. God gave us our ability to think and reason—that is a good thing. If, however, in the process of using our reason we come to conclusions that other Christians do not reach, and that causes us to reject them, we have been deceived by the evil one. Our pride has taken over and stopped our continued growth into the mind of Christ—a mind of complete humility and self-sacrifice. Human reason is not the ultimate standard for truth. Christians ought to be growing constantly in their understandings of the profound truths of the gospel—that’s part of our spiritual growth as communities. But requiring or even expecting others to be where you are is not conducive of the visible unity Christ so much wants. 7. Again, it is a good thing to use the intellectual abilities God has given us to plumb the depths of the marvelous truths of God. It is a good thing to think, and struggle and write about these matters. Individual Christians and Christian communities can and should draw great benefit in their spiritual growth from such efforts. Statements of belief can be very helpful in drawing our minds to the unspeakable riches and blessings we have been given and of which we can and should tell others. However, we must realize that such statements are the product of our human reasoning which, like everything else human, is not perfect. Even when we reach a mature level of doctrinal understanding, we need to remind ourselves constantly that there will always be Christians at all maturity levels—but they are still all Christians! 8. Once again, having an understanding of every Christian truth is not a requirement to be a Christian, a part of Christ’s church. No one who is trying to follow Christ ought to be forced to confess any belief beyond what they understand and know. All a person needs to know to be part of Christ’s church is that they are lost and that salvation is through Christ. When they confess that they believe in Christ and that they want to obey him fully according to his word—nothing else can be required. 9. Everyone who can make the confession of belief in Christ and commitment to obey him, and who show the reality of their commitment by the way they live, should consider each other as the precious saints of God, should love each other as sisters and brothers, children of the same family and father, temples of the same spirit, members of the same body, subjects of the same grace, objects of the same divine love, bought with the same price, and joint heirs of the same inheritance. Whoever God has joined together this way, no one should dare divide. 10. Division among Christians is a sickening evil, filled with many evils. It is anti-Christian because it destroys the visible unity of the body of Christ. It is as if Christ were cutting off parts of himself and throwing them away from the rest of his body! What a ludicrous picture! Division is anti-scriptural, since Christ himself specifically prohibited it, making it a direct violation of Christ’s will. It is anti-natural, because it makes Christians condemn, hate and oppose one another—people who are actually obligated in the strongest way to love each other as sisters and brothers, just like Christ loved them. In other words, division repudiates everything Christianity is supposed to stand for. 11. Two things are responsible for all the divisions and corruptions in Christ’s church through the centuries. One is a neglect or even fundamental misunderstanding of God’s will for us in scripture—that we have the mind of Christ and be transformed into his likeness. The other comes from the first. Assuming they are “right,” that they have gotten the “facts” perfectly, some have assumed the authority to impose their conclusions on others as terms of recognition and fellowship. 12. In reality, everything needed for the church to reach the highest state of perfection and purity on earth is first to receive as members only those who have understood their lostness and confessed their faith in Christ and commitment to follow him according to scripture; second, to keep as members only those who show those commitments in their everyday lives; and third, to see that ministers who reflect these ideals, preach only what is clearly taught in scripture. Finally, they must stick close to what scripture makes primary, seen in the example of the early church in the New Testament, without being distracted or corrupted by human tendencies toward pride and control. 13. Finally, in every body of Christians decisions must be made about precisely how to conduct its work and worship. Scripture does not dictate such details. Whatever the best way of doing things for the local context should be adopted. These procedures, however, should always be understood as expedients or conveniences for that time and place. Others who do things differently should never be denigrated or condemned for such things, and when decisions are made to do things differently in the future, such changes should never be an issue of fighting or division. The nature of these propositions is a call—a call to all followers of Christ today to be what Christ wants us to be. Christ’s church does not reflect the reality of the one body. We have not maintained the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. It is easy to be complacent about our divisions because they seem to work. Yet the fractured nature of the body is a scandal—it hinders the world from believing, it dissipates the efforts of Christians to serve, and distracts believers from their own spiritual development. We are impelled to say these things. We have heard again the admonition from Isaiah 57:14—“Remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” It is the sincere intention of these propositions and of the essays that follow to bring to the attention of Christians fundamental truths and first principles that will lead us toward a permanent unity. How far that goal is reached now remains with the readers.

We speak of God’s grace as “unmerited favor.” What does unmerited mean and what does favor mean? Please Read: Romans 4 4. What does it mean to have righteousness imputed (KJV) or credited (NIV) to a person? 5. According to this chapter, what does it take for righteousness to be imputed to you? Please Read: Ephesians 2:1-10 6. What were the driving forces in your life prior to Jesus? 7. List the things these verses say that God did for you. 8. What’s the difference between a gift and a wage? 9. If your salvation is a gift of God, what can you brag about? 10. Why did God save you from your sins and grant you eternal life? Amazing Grace Lyrics John Newton (1725-1807)
Stanza 6 anon.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

And so today I still have a dream. ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breaking the Ice: Besides heaven, what do you hope most for right now in your life or the lives of those you love? What role does scripture play in your hope for the future? 3. Please Read: Romans 4:18-25 & 5:1-5 4. According to the apostle Paul, why did God consider Abraham righteous (i.e. without sin in His sight, acceptable to God)? 5. How are you made righteous before God today? 6. What does it mean to “rejoice in the hope of the glory of God?” 7. What makes the hope Christians have different than the hope other religious people have according to Romans 5? Please Read: Romans 15:13 8. What role does the Holy Spirit play in your life to give you hope? Please Read: I Peter 1:3-6 9. How is your hope as a Christian a “living” hope as Peter describes? Please Read: Hebrews 10:23, Galatians 5:5, & I Thessalonians 4:13 10. Why is determining the context of a parable so important to understanding its meaning? Please Read: Luke 14:25, 15:1-3 2. Who is the audience in each of these verses? Please Read: Luke 15:4-32 3. Each of these parables share a common theme. What is it? 4. Whom does the older brother in the parable of the Prodigal Son represent? Please Read: Luke 16:1&13-15 5. The story of the rich man and Lazarus follows these verses. To whom did Jesus specifically address this teaching and what was it in reaction to? Please Read: Luke 16:19-31 6. Speculate how Jesus’ immediate audience would have responded to this teaching.
     7. Whom did the rich man represent and how does this teaching support Jesus’ reason for it in context? Please Read: Ezekiel 17:1-4 8. What elements in this story are unrealistic and how does this parable differ from those of Jesus? 9. Why does it matter if the story of Lazarus and the rich man is a parable or an allegory? Please Read: Revelation 20:13-15 10. What indications are there from the story of Lazarus and the rich man itself and from Revelation that the rich man was not in his final place?

Ben Riley, one of our shepherds, has written several articles on science and its coexistence with religion. This is an ongoing series. Articles will be added as written. This is such an important series of lessons as the world of science and technology has in some circles replaced a Divine Creator as the source hope, knowledge, and faith.

 			Senior Minister - Paul DeHart
This is where you get to learn something about the guy standing in the pulpit most Sunday mornings here at the Newburgh Church of Christ.

The apostle Paul said, "follow my example" but he added, "as I follow the example of Christ." (I Corinthians 1:11 - New International Version) He also said, " I decided that while I was with you I would forget about everything except Jesus Christ and his death on the cross." (I Corinthians 2:2 - New Century Version).

I've been some places, had some experiences, and learned some things. And, none of that really matters does it? If you're focusing on me or any other leader in this congregation then we're blocking your view of Jesus and need to get out of the way.

However, for those who are just curious: I grew up in the Northeast; served an enlistment in the Army as a German linguist; married Leann (best thing in my life next to Jesus); got a degree in English & a commission in the Air Force from Angelo State University, San Angelo, TX; helped Leann have our son Matt (next best thing in my life next to Jesus); retired from the Air Force after a career as an intelligence officer and instructor; got a degree in ministry from Southern Christian University, Montgomery, AL but like most in our fellowship have been studying the scriptures seriously since meeting Jesus; served as a minister in congregations in Randolph, NJ, & Horseheads, NY; and taught at a private Christian school in Pottstown, PA & at my alma mater Newton High School, Newton, NJ. It has been my pleasure in the Lord to serve as the senior minister at the Newburgh Church of Christ since May 2005.

If you want to know more about Jesus Christ I invite you to attend one of our LIFE Groups, come to our Sunday morning bible classes & worship services, or contact me for a personal bible study at: pauld@newburghchurch.org. Secretary - Becky Pruden

One of the greatest messages of the New Testament is that every single person matters to God.

We want you to know that you matter to us. Whether you are a member or a visitor we are interested in helping you know God better through His son Jesus the Christ.

If you would like someone from the church to come by to follow-up with you, then please contact the church office at 812.858.0181 or email Paul DeHart.

The body here at Newburgh has been working with Baja Missions since 2004 and works with the congregation in Vicente Guererro, Baja California, Mexico. Mission teams visit two or three times a year for short-term missions. Projects include: medical, dental, construction, classes for men, women, and childern, and food/blanket distribution.

We have gotten to know and love the body of believers in Vicente Guererro. Many people have gone to give and found that they get more in return than they give.

The next trip is planned for July 2009.

Are you looking for what Christians in the first century experienced as they spent time together with each other more than just once a week (Acts 2:46)? Are you willing to help and be helped by other believers on the path to heaven? Would you like an opportunity to further explore your questions about the bible? Do you want a chance to help impact your community? Answering yes to these questions indicates your readiness for a deeper commitment to Christ as part of this congregation. We promote a small group ministry here to provide a place for you to connect with other Christians and members of the surrounding communities. Our small group ministry’s mission statement is: “The small group ministry at the Newburgh church exists to: help members and seekers grow closer to God and each other through fellowship and bible study in an atmosphere of encouragement and welcome-ness. Small groups will help ensure that no one is left behind.” There are literally hundreds of books and articles written on small group ministries. Each author has a slightly different take on what small groups are all about. Sifting through this volume of information can be confusing. Additionally, most believers have had some type of small group experience with “cottage meetings,” “care groups,” “brother’s keeper’s groups,” or something similar.

L.I.F.E. Groups to Grow. Our small group ministry is specifically designed to help us grow by attracting people from our communities who are not currently committed to a church and connecting them to our members in meaningful relationships. We call our groups "L.I.F.E. Groups" because they are organized to balance four purposes: Love (sharing our needs); Instruction (knowing God better through His word in the bible); Fellowship (enjoying our relationships together);and Evangelism (introducing people to Jesus Christ & starting new groups).

We are continually forming new L.I.F.E. groups. If you are interested in participating in a group contact the church office via phone 812.858.0181 or email: pauld@newburghchurch.org and put LIFE Group in the subject line.

Worshipping The Lord - Worship

Archived Services

"Great is the Lord almighty and most worthy of praise!" Psalm 48:1. This is an exciting time for the family here at Newburgh as the Lord is blessing us! I praise God for the way in which you all allow Him to use you. I want to take this moment to especially thank you for bringing to worship a heart that is ready to meet Jesus. Each time we meet together serves only to strengthen the body and bring glory and honor to the Father for all that He has done.

But as we go through the week and Monday night turns into Wednesday ball games and we've had it up to here with work where is worship? Or where is Jesus? We need to realize that worship doesn't start with the first song and end with the song of encouragement. Remember that God seeks our continual praise. John 4:24 says "Worship God in spirit and truth." Do we really think this just means when we decide to make worship official? Paul says, "Pray without ceasing." I'm convinced that God seeks to be in constant contact with His children.

God's children. Just imagine your children not speaking with you for an entire day even though they inhabit your house. What kind of feeling would that produce? Would you be angry, sad or maybe just confused? Here you've done so much for them. You've provided a safe place to live, food and nourishment, clothes, you name it! What right do they have to...I think you're getting the picture. In 2nd Peter 1God promises to provide everything we need for life and godliness according to His own glory and goodness. We've definitely got reason to praise.

Paul in Ephesians encourages us to be "filled with the Spirit" and the command is given to "speak to one another with psalms hymns and spiritual songs". Great! Now we know how to conduct a part of our worship time! The verse does not stop there; it continues to say, "always giving thanks to the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." We must expand our worship time to all the time. Think on Romans 12:1, and our lives as a "spiritual act of worship."

It's a daily struggle and challenge to let God into all of my life. There are things I do that I wish He didn't see. Please join me in a life that attempts to give all things as praise to the Father and a life intent on building up the body of Christ.

By our lips, our service, and our lives we worship the Lord God Almighty. Worship is a key, dynamic component of The Newburgh Church Family.

What We Believe - What We Believe

We are a group of believers who love the Lord and seek only to do His will. We have no creed, but Christ.

We find the Bible to be sufficient, since it is literally God-breathed.

We seek to simply be the church that we find in the New Testament.

We are not the only Christians, but we are Christians, only.

Simple, New Testament Christianity

The Newburgh church of Christ is an independent congregation of Christians trying to follow Jesus Christ according to the New Testament. We have no church authority beyond the Bible. Our leaders are chosen from the congregation according to the qualifications found in Scripture. We believe that all Christians are members of the one body of Christ and that we can be united spiritually if we return to biblical teachings. Our goal is to be Christians only while recognizing that we are not the only Christians. Our faith and worship are drawn from our understanding of the New Testament. We meet together on Sundays to remember Jesus in the Lord's Supper, pray, sing, and hear a message from the Bible. Our commitment to two practices of the first century church distinguishes us from some groups of believers today: a cappella singing in worship and adult immersion in water for the forgiveness of sins as a believer's response to the gracious work of God.

We consider ourselves a part of a larger fellowship of New Testament congregations, all which grew out of the Restoration Movement in the US in the 1800's. Their premises were "Speak where the Bible speaks; remain silent where the Bible is silent," and "In matters of faith, unity; in matters of opinion, liberty; and in all things, charity."

The Newburgh church of Christ first met as a congregation in the early 1990s at Camp Brosend in Newburgh. Later it met for a time at the Seventh Day Adventist facilities in Newburgh. In the mid-1990s the congregation purchased and renovated its current facility - a former barbeque restaurant - at 5111 S. Plaza Dr. in Newburgh (two blocks east of SR261 off Robin Hill Rd.). The auditorium seats 250.

While we look to the past in the New Testament for our guidance we work now to help people and look forward to when Jesus comes again. The congregation is dedicated to foreign mission work having sponsored missionaries all over the world. Since 2004 the Newburgh church of Christ has been involved in mission work in Vicente Guerrero on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. In 2007 we sent three teams including members from our own congregation, other churches of Christ, and other churches in the Evansville area. We conducted medical clinics, handed out food packages, taught adult and children's bible classes, and helped build a new bathroom facility for the church building. In addition to sending mission teams to build relationships with our Mexican brothers and sisters in Christ in person we also provide annual financial support to the full-time minister for the congregation there.

Locally, in 2007 the Newburgh church of Christ gave more than $30,000 towards and provided the bulk of the labor for a Habitat for Humanity home in Chandler, IN. Nearly half the members of the congregation worked on the Habitat house at some time over the course of the build.

In response to the November 2005 tornado which hit Evansville and Newburgh, the congregation in conjunction with the churches of Christ Disaster Relief, Inc. of Nashville, TN donated 24 sets of brand new refrigerators, washers & dryers, and electric ranges to tornado victims.

We maintain an interactive website at www.newburghchurch.org where one can watch our services streamed live at 10:30am on Sundays or archived on line. Our Senior Minister since 2005 is Paul DeHart and he can be reached for further information at 812.858.0181 or via email at pauld@newburghchurch.org.

LIFE Group/Family Discussion Guide Suffering Submission 9-17-2008 Breaking the Ice: Please have only the women only in your group answer this question. How do you feel about your church’s interpretation of the teaching about submission? The Greek word for submit (hupotasso) is used in its various forms the New Testament 40 times. It occurs 7 times in I Peter. Please Read: I Peter 2:13 & 18; 3:1- 6 & 22; 5:5 1. Who is told to submit in these verses to whom and why? Please Read: Ephesians 5:21 and James 4:1-10 2. Compare these verses with I Peter 5:5. What do they all have to say about submission? 3. How is a Christian wife’s submission to her husband different than the obligation of all Christians to submit to one another in the Lord? Please Read: Genesis 1:26-31 4. How did God feel about both men and women when He created them? Please Read: Genesis 3:16-19 5. According to this account what are the effects of the Fall on men and women? Please Read: Matthew 22:30 6. What does this verse say about men and women in heaven? Please Read: Galatians 3:28 7. What does this verse say about men and women in the kingdom of God? 8. In what ways could a misapplication of the biblical teachings on submission contribute to domestic abuse in Christian families? 9. Sadly, the research according to Dr. Steven R. Tracy (http://www.mendingthesoulministries.org ) and others indicates that Christian women who are being abused don’t feel they will get help from their church leaders or churches. Why do you think this is the case? 10. What can you do to prevent domestic violence against women or help those who are victims in your congregation?
